What's right and what's left

Vivianne was a normal middle schooler. She was shy and didn’t have that many friends. She was smart, but unconfident, and just a little bit eccentric. One day, she woke up with two small creatures before her. “Hello. I’m Leym and she’s Arpé.” “Ryna, not Arpé!” “Arpé sounds way better.” “No, it doesn’t. And I have the right to pick my name. It’s Ryna.” Vivianne, in disbelief, thought: “What? Who? Huh? Are they some kind of creatures that appeared out of nowhere or am I going crazy? Why…” “Didn’t I already told ya? We’re Leym and…Ryna.” “Did you just read my thoughts?” Vivianne said. “More like we heard ‘em. And you don’t have to talk, just think. People will think you’re crazy.” Leym said. “We are…um…Leym? What are we, actually? I mean we were told what to do, but is our mission what defines us? We were never told what we are!” “Calm down, Ryna. If we don’t know what we are, it just means we can decide what we are! I am a counself!”

After a brief explanation about their mission, Vivianne got two things: they were supposed to be her counselors and Leym thought elfs were cool. “I don’t need counseling, nor do I want such thing.” “Right, sweetie. Whatever. Our mission is above what ya want.” “Why?” “It is our only proof of existence.” Ryna said. Silence. “So, is this like that angel and devil thing?” “Does either of us look like devils to ya?” Leym asked. Vivianne couldn’t hide her thought, unfortunately: “Yeah, you.” “Meanie.”

Days with two human-like things on your shoulders were noisy. It was like her thoughts were spoken to her, just in a more annoying voice. “That gives you 0!” “No, it makes no sense, it should be 1!” “Shut up, I can’t concentrate.” “Well, I am bored as well, having to stay here, looking at you doing homework. Learn to have some fun sometimes, will ya?” “Maybe learning is fun to her. I also like it.” “Thanks, Ryna. You understand me.” “Ugh, what a touching moment.” Leym groaned.

Even with two counselors, Vivianne wasn’t the kind to actually listen. “Eat more, Viv, you’re thin already.” Leym said. “It is for your own health.” continued Ryna. “You’re saying that, but it’s not like I can eat more. I’m full.” “Don’t give me that! Soup is not meant to be eaten from such a small bowl. Ya should eat more!” “How come you are suddenly agreeing with each other?” Vivianne asked. “We are not opposites. We are just different. We don’t actually know each other that much either.” Ryna said. “Weird.” “Don’t think that changing the subject will make me forget. Eat!”

Ryna was similar to Vivianne in many ways and they agreed on most things. Leym, on the other hand, was almost entirely different. After some time, Vivianne started listening only to Ryna’s advice. Not that Leym would stop giving her own anyway. One night, Vivianne woke up from a nightmare, breathing heavily. She couldn’t shake off the creepy feeling and was too scared to fall asleep. “Want me to sing you a song?” Leym was standing on her left, on the pillow. “How come you are awake? Shouldn’t you two be sleeping when I sleep?” “Not exactly. We just go to bed the same time as you. Ryna sleeps at the same time as you, but I have insomnia.” Vivianne didn’t say anything, but Leym got confirmation from her thoughts and started singing. Suprisingly, her voice was soothing and warm. After some time, the girl fell asleep. For Leym, on the other hand, it was even harder to sleep now. She read the nightmare from the girl’s thoughts. And there wasn’t anybody that could sing her a lullaby.

Vivianne got used to the constant bickering that only she could hear. Without even realizing, the counselfs really helped her at times. It was easier to arrange her thoughts and make decisions with their assistance. And now, she was finally entering high school. She doubted she would make any friends, just to be scolded by Leym (“Be more confident! You can wear weird half-red half-black pants, but ya can’t talk to people?” ) and encouraged by Ryna (“There could be some interesting people in there.”)

She did make friends, good friends. There was one that resembled Ryna and one that resembled Leym and many others. High school, even though it was hard, brought many happy moments. Vivianne could talk endlessly with her new friends and got along very well with them. Her grades were always good, because she was a hard worker.

One night, Vivianne woke up from a nightmare, breathing heavily. She tried to calm herself down by counting to 100. She drank a glass of water and, eventually, fell back asleep. Next day, she went to school, talked with her friends, learned new things and came back home. She ate some soup from a tiny bowl, did her homework and went to sleep.

Two pieces of light ascended to the sky. They went in different directions and vanished in thin air. Mission complete.
